The Cretan Script Family Includes the Carian Alphabet
نویسنده
چکیده
The Cretan Script Family is a set of related writing systems that have a putative origin in Crete. Recently, Revesz [11] identified the Cretan Hieroglyphs, Linear A, Linear B, the Cypriot syllabary, and the Greek, Old Hungarian, Phoenician, South Arabic and Tifinagh alphabets as members of this script family and using bioinformatics algorithms gave a hypothetical evolutionary tree for their development and presented a map for their likely spread in the Mediterranean and Black Sea areas. The evolutionary tree and the map indicated some unknown writing system in western Anatolia to be the common origin of the Cypriot syllabary and the Old Hungarian alphabet. This paper argues that the missing link may be some ancestor of the Carian alphabet because several Carian alphabet letters show an intermediate stage between the corresponding Cypriot syllabary signs and the Old Hungarian letters.

The paper develops a novel similarity measure between pairs of script symbols. The similarity measure is used as an aid to develop a comparison table of the n...
متن کاملEstablishing the West-Ugric Language Family with Minoan, Hattic and Hungarian by a Decipherment of Linear A
This paper develops a feature-based similarity measure to visually compare script symbols from different alphabets and syllabaries and then uses that similarity measure within a novel algorithm to develop a new phonetic grid for Linear A. The phonetic grid is then used to develop an English-Minoan-Uralic dictionary of basic words and grammatical suffixes and prefixes. The dictionary is then use...
متن کاملA Computational Translation of the Phaistos Disk
For over a century the text of the Phaistos Disk remained an enigma without a convincing translation. This paper presents a novel semi-automatic translation method that uses for the first time a recently discovered connection between the Phaistos Disk symbols and other ancient scripts, including the Old Hungarian alphabet. The connection between the Phaistos Disk script and the Old Hungarian al...
